1. INTRODUCTION

This is the readme for release 5.8.4 of Social Science Automation's
"Profiler Plus".

The intended readership of this document is both end users and Social
Science Automation staff. This document is not confidential.

1.1. What is Profiler Plus?

Profiler Plus is a general-purpose text analysis engine designed for
the use in the social sciences. It automatically codes textual
material, using prebuilt coding schemes available from Social Science
Automation (http://socialscienceautomation.com/), or custom-built coding
schemes developed by users themselves. The data produced can be used
for a wide range of content analysis tasks and are compatible with
various data analysis programs. In short, Profiler Plus has wide
applicability, especially in the social and behavioral sciences.

Its basic strategy is to search a sentence for ordered sets of tokens
(words and/or punctuation) that have been identified as indicators of
a trait, of another measure of interest or perhaps of a particular
type of communication. Profiler Plus examines each token in turn and
queries a database to determine if the token and its neighbors match
particular patterns. When matches are found the indicated actions are
taken: in the simplest case a code is written to a file.

This version of Profiler Plus is for "coding only" - in other words it
is intended for users running pre-built schemes and does not support
creation or modification of coding schemes.

1.2. Documentation conventions

All pathnames in this document refer to directories relative to the
directory in which this file resides (possibly after unpacking or
installing the product), unless stated otherwise.

1.3. Further documentation

* Release Notes (release-notes.txt)

  The release notes list changes since previous releases.

* User's Guide (manual/ug/index.txt)

  The user's guide contains full documentation for running the
  application.

* Developer's Guide (manual/dg/index.txt)

  In this context, the role of developers is to configure, build and
  repackage the product for ultimate use by Social Science
  Automation's end users. Therefore the Developer's Guide will
  typically not be distributed to end users.

3.1. End User License

Use of this application is governed by the Software License Agreement
in license.txt. This agreement is displayed during installation and

obtain a keyfile, contact support@socialscience.net or purchase online
from http://socialscienceautomation.com/.

Without a valid keyfile, Profiler Plus will only code the first ten
sentences in any file. It is fully functional in all other respects.
